When I first got into dog training, the mantra was “dogs are pack animals.” It was never questioned: dogs were strong bonding animals and fit into human families so well, sometimes to the point of developing bona fide disorders like separation anxiety. And a lot of behavior was deconstructed with social hierarchies in mind. Nobody examined what dogs do when they are not inserted into human families, i.e. are free-ranging. So a while ago I took a look at what is known about feral or semi-feral populations of dogs around the world. It turns out there are many such populations.

Reviewer: Catherine Harding This is a wonderful book, at least given where I am with my dog training. I am relatively new to the world of dog training (5 years) and Jean helps you understand how to break all commands into workable segments. She also does a great job of supporting the trainer -- I often feel overwhelmed when things don't go well, and Jean's book sorts that out. I like the way she helps you learn to drop back a level when the dog doesn't get it, or push forward if the dog has clearly understood what is being asked. This is a very sensible book! It would be good for teachers to read and try to implement in their classes. I wish I had had it from the outset.

It’s been pointed out to me and I’ve pointed it out to myself that the subtitle of The Culture Clash has the word “revolutionary” in it. The book actually makes a case for training using operant conditioning, a technology that’s been around for sixty years. |

Veterinary behaviorist Dr. Melissa Bain discusses whether clients inadvertently encourage aggression in their pets.
Aggression is a common cause of relinquishment and euthanasia of our companion animals. Veterinarians are at the forefront of helping owners recognize these problems early by asking all owners about problem behaviors that their pets may be having, and getting the owners and their pets the help that they need.
